If you’re a fan of Liam Neeson and you like movies like The Bourne Identity, then you really can’t go wrong with Unknown. It’s a classic psychological thriller that leaves you wondering what’s what for a solid, fast-moving two hours.

Neeson plays Dr. Martin Harris, a botanist from New Hampshire who goes to Berlin to attend a biotechnology conference. While his wife (January Jones) is checking-in at the hotel desk, Harris realizes that he left his briefcase (with his passport) at the airport, and he grabs a cab to go back for it. The cab crashes into a river and Dr. Harris wakes up four days later, only to discover that someone else (Aidan Quinn) has assumed his identity. Even his own wife fails to recognize or vouch for him.

With his sanity hanging by a thread – and killers on his trail- Dr. Harris embarks on a dangerous mission to prove who he is. He enlists the help of a young woman cabbie who saved his life (actress/model Diane Kruger) and from a quirky retired spy whose glory days came and went in the Cold War era (Bruno Ganz).

The rest of the story unfolds in a hail of bodies, bullets, car chases, and plot twists that are sometimes formulaic, and other times surprising. The acting and dialogue occasionally drift into stilted and cheesy territory, but for the most part, Unknown is an engaging, PG-13 ride that keeps you guessing til the very end. It’s not a great movie, but it’s a good one – especially if you’re in the mood for action, suspense, and lots of Liam.

  1. I agree with this review. Unknown was certainly entertaining…I didn’t look at my watch one time which says something for me.

The comparison to The Bourne Identity is a good one. Unknown is a movie worth seeing, but I wouldn’t necessarily run out on opening weekend.
