The Artist
Posted by Arty Chick on November 25, 2011
I have my favorite movie of the year now, and I expect that The Artist will be at the top of a lot of other reviewers’ lists, too. I’ve been told I gush about it. And I do not gush often. Considering that it is in black & white and is a silent film, you might wonder why.
The Muppets
Posted by Adventurous Chick on November 23, 2011
It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights… Oh, nostalgia take me away! I grew up with the Muppets and have fond memories of them. So when I heard there was a new Muppet movie coming out after all of these years I was excited to relive a little bit of my childhood. But I was also worried that it wouldn’t live up to my Muppet memories. Let’s face it, most things from our childhoods rarely do. But I am happy to report that The Muppets are just as fun now as they were back then.
The Lie
Posted by Arty Chick on November 22, 2011
Sometimes you just need to see a movie that is not all flashy and star-filled. There is a strange joy in watching actors you’ve never seen before since you bring no expectations to their performances. The Lie is one of those little indie treats. It is based on a short story by T. Coraghessan Boyle about a 30-something guy who wakes up to his going nowhere life and concocts a lie to get out of work, which then spirals out of control.
Puss in Boots
Posted by Adventurous Chick on November 8, 2011
Like a lot of people in the northeast, I got shut out of going to the movies Halloween weekend because of a freak October snowstorm. So what did I go to see this past weekend? Puss In Boots! That’s right, the cartoon cat seduced me, and I obviously wasn’t alone. Puss won the box office for the second week in a row even though Tower Heist was expected to take the top spot.
A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
Posted by Mainstream Chick on November 5, 2011
It seems way too early for a “Christmas” movie, but to release A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas any later would be like re-releasing Bambi on opening day of deer hunting season.
Tower Heist
Posted by Mainstream Chick on November 3, 2011
The trailer for Tower Heist makes it look like an Oceans Eleven-esque comedy ensemble thievery pic. And guess what? That’s exactly what it is, only not as good. On the Oceans scale, I’d give it a six and a half.
The Rum Diary
Posted by Arty Chick on October 29, 2011
Johnny Depp has a special connection with Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. First he played him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and now he’s brought Thompson’s “long-lost” novel The Rum Diary to the screen, playing the fictional Paul Kemp, a failed novelist looking for some inspiration in Puerto Rico. Kemp is basically the proto-Gonzo Thompson.
Johnny English Reborn
Posted by Mainstream Chick on October 20, 2011
I didn’t see the first Johnny English movie in 2003, so I have no basis for comparison. But I think I can safely say if you liked that one, you’ll probably like the sequel as well. It is, what I like to call, harmlessly stupid entertainment. As you can probably tell from the movie poster, the Johnny English “franchise” is a spoof on the spy genre (especially the iconic James Bond films) so it’s laden with gadgets, gals and gallantry – all gone shamelessly awry.
50/50
Posted by Mainstream Chick on September 29, 2011
Odds are much better than 50/50 that you’ll really like 50/50. It is, hands down, one of my favorite movies of the year. You’ll cry a little and laugh a lot.
What’s Your Number?
Posted by Mainstream Chick on September 29, 2011
What’s Your Number? is so bad that I’m reluctant to waste my time writing much of a “review”. If you choose to see it anyway, it’s all on you – but feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section below!
