Seriously? That’s what I thought when I heard the Coen Brothers film announced as an Oscar nominee for best picture. It’s out on DVD now and I have to admit I saw it a while ago but I struggled with my review because all I wanted to say about it was “I hated it.” I can’t help but think that if anybody but Joel and Ethan Coen (Academy darlings that they are) had made this movie, it would never have been nominated for an Academy Award.
A Serious Man chronicles the woes of one Larry Gopnik, [... Keep reading]

Crazy Heart almost went straight to DVD and that would have been a crying shame because then hardly anyone would have known about what is probably Jeff Bridges’ best performance to date. Thankfully, it did make it to theaters and you can go see Bridges playing washed up country singer Bad Blake.
The movie’s got all the elements of a country song – a down and out cowboy traveling the highways and byways alone in a beat-up truck after too much booze and too many failed marriages, until the love of a good woman turns things around. And I dare say [... Keep reading]

If you are already a musical fan, you might enjoy Nine. I, however, am not a big musical fan so I went to see it hoping that it would be transcendent. It was not. The star-studded cast drew me in. Daniel-Day Lewis, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, even Sophia Loren… how could I resist? But I left underwhelmed. Only Marion Cotillard gave what I considered an excellent performance.
Cotillard plays the long-suffering wife of Day-Lewis’s character, Italian film director Guido Contini. Shooting is about to start on Guido’s new film, but there’s just one problem, he hasn’t written a word [... Keep reading]

I know it’s awards season and there are tons of great movies in theaters for the holidays, but let’s take just a moment to look ahead to summer. On my “blockbuster” watch list – Robin Hood. Normally, I wouldn’t get excited about another Robin Hood movie. I mean come on, there have been, what, dozens of incarnations of the story on the big screen (and small). But this one has something the others did not. It has Russell Crowe and it’s directed by Ridley Scott. That’s the same duo that gave us Gladiator, and god I loved Gladiator, and Crowe [... It’s a Chickflix first! Adventurous Chick, Arty Chick and Mainstream Chick all contributed to the $33 Million box office take for Where the Wild Things Are in its opening weekend, and each had her own views to share on the children’s-book-turned-live-action-movie. Rather than fight over who gets to (or has to) write the review, the Chicks hashed it out in a roundtable discussion. Here is how it went:
Adventurous Chick: I had been looking forward to this movie ever since I saw the preview months ago and I really, really, wanted to like it but I was kind of disappointed.
Arty Chick: [... Keep reading]

I will admit that as a bored high school student I would sometimes sit in class staring out the window fantasizing about a handsome man pulling up in a fancy sports car and whisking me away to a more exciting life. So I can completely understand how 16-year old Jenny is seduced by an older, seemingly sophisticated man in An Education.
It’s 1961 England and young Jenny, played by Carey Mulligan, is feeling stuck in her adolescent world and dreams of her life to come while listening to French music in her suburban bedroom. She and her parents believe that for [... Keep reading]

“A woman’s hair is her glory.” Maya Angelou says it in Good Hair and it’s an idea that goes back to biblical times. So no wonder so many women are obsessed with their hair. But what exactly is “good hair”? That’s the question comedian Chris Rock asks in his documentary and the answers he gets are hilarious, informative and sometimes political commentary – Reverend Al Sharpton talks about wearing your economic oppression on your head and comedian Paul Mooney says, “If your hair is relaxed, white people are relaxed. If your hair is nappy, they’re not happy.”
Rock went into [... Keep reading]

These boys are definitely worth a couple of hours of your time. All three, Clive Owen and the two young actors who play his sons, give wonderful performances in The Boys Are Back. It’s the story of sportswriter Joe Warr, played by Owen, who becomes a single parent when his wife dies of cancer. It’s a story that could have easily veered into tearjerker territory, and I was ready for that with lots of tissues on hand, but it didn’t. Sure there were a few moments when I shed a tear, but there were also moments when I laughed and [... Keep reading]

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is delicious, a fun film for kids and the adults who take them to see it. I saw it in 2D because my six-year-old excuse for seeing movies like this has something against the 3D glasses, but I think it must be even more fun in 3D. Cheeseburgers flying off the screen at you… how much fun would that be? But even without the benefit of 3D this movie was chock full of laughs for both my first-grade companion and me.
The story is set on a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic [... Keep reading]

Sandra, Sandra, Sandra… how could you? I expected more from you. After all, this summer you gave us The Proposal, a fun summer rom-com and total chick flick. But All About Steve… well… ugh.
Sandra Bullock stars as Mary Magdalene Horowitz a crossword constructor for a local California paper who is so socially inept that at first you think she might be somewhere on the autism spectrum. When her parents set her up on a blind date her expectations are low, but he turns out to be so “hot” that Mary can’t help but jump him as soon as they get [... Keep reading]
