I agree that it's a fine choice for the family. It's painless for the adults and John Krasinsky is quite endearing in this type of role. The movie feels like a bit of a throwback to those wholesome Disney dramas of yore - y'know, back when Lindsay Lohan was the poster child for good, wholesome entertainment...

It is so much more than a remake of A Star is Born, which was itself a remake of an earlier film What Price Hollywood. The Artist is brimming with references to so many films both silent and talkie, but its story is its own. And I LOVED the ending! It is a 21st century film without a doubt, but takes you back to a time when you were able to provide your own interpretations, so that every person in the audience "heard" a different movie.

There is a lot to be entertained by here but there is also way too much that we can't actually take seriously and it actually ends up being more of just a silly thriller that has a good cast, that doesn't really do much. Good review. Check out mine when you get the chance.

I think the problem with her is that she has potential as an action hero, but this one needed an actress. Her delivery was pretty much one note, which works fine for a kick-ass, killing machine, just not for a lead character.

This movie made me want to do three things: visit Barcelona, visit Dublin, start taking kick-boxing lessons again. It did not, however, make me want to recommend it to anyone. I feel like it would be a fun rental when you are in the mood for some kick-ass action. But I expected more from Soderbergh. The plot is your standard everyone double crossing everyone thriller, nothing special really. The cast is full of big names, but like Arty Chick said, Carano can't really run with the big dogs yet when it comes to the acting. But I do think she has potential. She has quite a screen presence when she's beating the crap out of someone. So who knows? Maybe she can build on that. Definitely in the wait for rental category.

I, too, was impressed (as always) by Meryl, yet intensely disappointed in the movie itself. And I would rather see the big awards go to someone like Viola Davis who gives an excellent performance in an excellent movie rather than someone who gives an excellent performance in a mediocre movie. But will the Academy/industry agree? Thoughts?

I agree with Mainstream Chick. Joyful Noise was fair at best...the musical productions were good while the plot was definitely lacking and what plot was there...was completely predictable. I recommend waiting to see it until it is on network tv.

This is one of my favorite movies of the year as well. I loved the humor and the heart. It was nice to watch a movie about cancer that made me laugh more than cry. I'm loving just about everything JGL does these days and Seth Rogen was a surprise to me. Frankly I didn't think he could do much more than stoner comedies (although to be fair he does enjoy getting high in this movie too). Definitely put this one on your list to rent if you haven't already seen it.

Yep. Definitely a grown up movie. George is great in it, too! Scruffy and comic and sad and angry and struggling to find a way to be a good dad. I like the layers of the story and the way it twists and turns on the way to the ending, like life, no clear exact meanings. I am a big fan of Alexander Payne's style of storytelling and this one keeps coming back to me, always a good sign.
