I’m no comic book aficionado (far from it), but I really liked The Avengers. And that’s mostly because I really like watching Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. You’ve got to love a superhero who’s cynical, sarcastic, witty and walks around in tight jeans and a “Black Sabbath” tee-shirt when he’s not suited up for battle.

The movie also features a host of other reluctant heroes from the Marvel Comic Universe, including the Shakespearean thunder god Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the recently defrosted World War Two soldier-extraordinaire, Captain America (Chris Evans), the mild-mannered doctor-turned-green-monster-when-he’s-angry The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the brooding guy who’s good with arrows, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the psychologically damaged superspy chick in a form-fitting bodysuit, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

They’re called into action by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the persuasive head of an international spy agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., to retrieve some little blue box of energy called The Tesseract and save the world from an army of aliens led by Thor’s evil adopted brother Loki. I’ve gotta admit, the plot kinda lost me. But it really didn’t matter. The Avengers has a kick-ass cast and it’s a ton of fun watching the mish-mash of superheroes spar with each other, physically and verbally, then have each other’s backs – sort of – when the obligatory epic battle scenes commence. Go Team!?

The interactions between Captain America and Iron Man, between Iron Man and Thor, and between Thor and The Hulk provide the bulk of the entertainment. And Loki (Tom Hiddleston) makes for a quirky and engaging villain. Hawkeye and Black Widow definitely take a back seat in this one (and it’s easy to see why their characters don’t have their own movie franchises.)

The Avengers is written and directed by the uber-talented Joss Whedon, who knows how to make a well-paced crowd-pleaser. The movie is nearly two and a half hours long, but time – like Iron Man – flies. I’m not sure the 3D added all that much, but it’s definitely worth trying to see it in IMAX, or at least on a really big screen.

Bottom line: Even if you don’t know a Loki from a gnocchi, The Avengers is good for a solid cinematic escape.

Be sure and stick around for the end-credits, especially if you’re a comic book geek. There’s a small hint of what’s to come. Because – duh – the studios are already working on a sequel. And did I mention that Iron Man 3 is due out May 3, 2013… the Thor sequel on Nov. 13, 2013… and Captain America 2 in April 2014? But first, we’ve got to get through the next Batman, Spiderman and Superman sequels and reboots! Ah, summer. Bring it on!

They’re baaack! Holmes and Watson (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law) pick up slightly after we last saw them in the first Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson is about to be married, and Holmes is still not entirely happy about it. And meanwhile, bombs are going off all over Europe, and while everyone else is blaming it on anarchists, Sherlock knows that it has something to do with his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). He just has to put the pieces together, and he is willing to play Moriarty’s extreme body-count cat and mouse game if necessary, even if it means ruining Watson’s honeymoon.

All the same elements are here that made the first one such a fun romp – the women (Noomi Rapace, Kelly Reilly, Rachel McAdams) who are lovely but peripheral, the Guy Ritchie-style fight scenes, the witty banter, the delightfully designed Victorian sets and clothes, and the most satisfying part of this franchise, the buddy relationship. Downey and Law really do have wonderful chemistry, which makes this kind of silly flick totally entertaining, even if it has a few scripting holes and you don’t ever get to know the girl that comes along for most of the ride. You don’t even notice that it clocks in at 129 minutes.

This time around the story centers on Professor Moriarty’s plan to start a World War and become a rich man by cornering the munitions market. He and Sherlock have a few scenes together where they play mind games with one another, and a few where they attempt to kill one another, and while the fate of the world lies in the balance, they even play a nice game of chess. And just to keep Holmes on his toes and out of his hair, Moriarty goes after Watson and his new bride, on the train to Brighton for their honeymoon, which of course brings Watson right back into the thick of the story, as the two of them race to stop the villainous Professor from destroying Western civilization.

This is the kind of movie where the story isn’t really all that important. It is all about Holmes and Watson having a ripping good time. As usual, the über-talented Downey goes all out, one minute fighting with a parkour-adept Cossack, the next showing up in another silly disguise (his urban camouflage is particularly fun), and later dancing with his perfectly sane sidekick Watson. It is this infectious sense of intelligent whimsy that will keep this series going. There are also some very funny scenes with Holmes’s brother Mycroft played by the hilarious Stephen Fry. [But if there was one thing I would ask of Guy Ritchie for the next one, could you please let Holmes shave? Downey is scruffy throughout and, as the minutes go by, more and more beaten and bruised. I'd just love to see that face in its beautiful, pure state for a scene or two before the brass knuckles come out.]

I’d recommend this one to anyone who liked the first Sherlock Holmes. It the same winning formula and I can see many more to come. It would be great for a date night movie, too. Cute guys for the chicks and lots of fight scenes for the roosters. Something for everyone.

I do love Robert Downey Jr., and I’d probably pay to watch him read a phone book, but Due Date is Zach Galifianakis’ movie. This road-trip comedy about a couple of polar opposites driving from Atlanta to Los Angeles rests on the bizarreness of Galifianakis’ character, aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay. He’s the most socially awkward, annoying, and yet entirely innocent guy on the screen in a long while.

I am not a fan of dumb comedy and Due Date definitely has some extremely stupid moments, but it teeters on that edge balancing it with warmth and buddy shtick, and I can’t really imagine anyone other than Galifianakis’ playing it so honestly. Downey’s straight-man portrayal of Peter Highman, a husband desperate to get back to the west coast for the birth of his first child, is pretty rough at times and I thought by the end, I’d grow to hate him, but the script in its very broad strokes brings him around and these two

incompatible guys end up (surprise!) friends.

The comedy plays out mostly in Ethan’s obliviousness to the world which results in Peter’s humiliation, placement on the no-fly list, a drug arrest, some broken bones and a gun shot wound, a spectacular car crash, a police chase and various other interruptions to his quest to get home. Nothing deep here or particularly new in the world of comedy, but these two actors play off one another so well, you enjoy the ride, bumps and all. And there are a lot of laughs.

We’re moving out of the summer blockbuster kids’ movies and into the fall when traditionally a more serious adult roster hits the screens. This year? Well, there are a few that seem Oscar worthy, several with our favorite men headlining, a couple that look like real chick flicks and what just might be some nice comedies. See for yourself.

September

Sept 1

The American

Academy Award winner George Clooney comes back to us (too few films George!) in the title role of this suspense thriller, filmed on location in (his backyard) Italy. Jack (Clooney) is a master assassin. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. There Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest and pursues romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

Sept 3

Machete

He looked like just another day laborer from the streets, and the perfect fall guy for a crooked political assassination. But he turned out to be Machete (Danny Trejo), a legendary ex-federale with a deadly attitude and the skills to match. Spin-off of Grind House but will probably get a big audience because of the girls involved: Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba.

Going the Distance

When aspiring journalist Erin (Drew Barrymore) moves to San Francisco to finish her last year of school, boyfriend Garrett (Justin Long), an assistant music scout, stays in Manhattan to pursue his ambitions and wait on that promotion he’s been promised. With a webcam connection and frequent flier miles, the two gamely navigate the pitfalls and miscommunications of their bi-coastal romance, dodging bad advice from friends and some predatory singles who won’t take “taken” for an answer. But when it seems their wait is almost over, Erin scores her dream job in California just as Garrett’s career heats up in New York. The big breaks they’ve been hoping for could break them up for good…unless their love can truly go the distance.

We Are Family

We Are Family is a Bollywood remake of the Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts starrer, Stepmom. The storyline revolves around a divorcee mother who is suffering from cancer and has to accept another woman in her husband’s and children’s lives. Maya’s life is all about her three children, who think nothing less than the world of her. Despite being divorced from her husband, Maya has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her house, under her watch, and that they continue to remain a happy family unit. However, when Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya, a career oriented woman, who has a lot to learn about children, to the family, the situation immediately takes an unexpected turn.

The Winning Season

Sam Rockwell plays a has-been coach who is given a shot at redemption when he’s asked to run the local high school’s girls basketball team. Emma Roberts is cast as a player he befriends, and Rob Corddry will play the school’s principal. This film is listed as a 2009 film in IMDB, which isn’t usually a good sign for a movie, released a year later. Fingers crossed for a decent comedy.

A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop

Based on the 1985 film Blood Simple by the Coen Brothers, this historical thriller changes the Coens’ backdrop from a small Texas town to a small Chinese town in the Gansu province, but keeps the plot intact: a jealous husband hires a professional to kill his adulterous wife and her lover. Naturally, things go awry and get bloody fast.

Zhang Yimou’s version stars Sun Honglei and Ni Dahong, and also features a duo of heavily caricatured fools for comic relief. I was no fan of the original but somehow this remake is appealing. Watch the trailer.

Sept 10

Legendary

It starts with a picked upon teenager looking to reunite his family through high school wrestling, which previously tore his family apart resulting in a tragedy. Then there is the ne’er do well older brother who was the big high school wrestling champ and who is now called upon to step up to help. And there is the mom who just wants her family healed. Silly sounding premise, but good cast: Patricia Clarkson, Danny Glover, and WWE Wrestling star John Cena. This is from WWE Studios so they need it to do well. Hmmm. Good luck?

Cracks

Cracks follows an elite group of boarding school girls who compete for the attention of their freethinking and glamorous young teacher Miss G (Green). She encourages them to indulge their desires, flout the establishment and – suggesting a world of adventures in her own past – pursue a life of independence and travel. The girls are thrilled to have such an inspiring teacher, but the status quo is threatened when the arrival of an exotic and beautiful Spanish student (Maria Valverde) disturbs the girl’s rigid and remorseless power structure. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang’s latest job, when they briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name…and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug…not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path. Ben Affleck directed as well.

It tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with a vampire child in a New Mexico town in the early 1980s. The Swedish film was very good. It took place in a bleak, cold landscape and wasn’t a Twilight or a True Blood kind of vampire tale. It was more about loner kids who despite one being a vampire help one another through tough times. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life form began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”…… Our story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer. Adam “Bug” Heller (Max Thieriot) was supposed to die on the bloody night his father went insane. Unaware of his dad’s terrifying crimes, he has been plagued by nightmares since he was a baby. But if Bug hopes to save his friends from the monster that’s returned, he must face an evil that won’t rest…until it finishes the job it began the day he was born. Desperate for a new fighter that will help him win back everything he owes, the promoter catches a break when a 450-pound church handyman (Paul “Big Show” Wight) who has spent his entire life in an orphanage agrees to wrestle on behalf of his fellow orphans. I have to say, I’m rooting for this one because I met Big Show once and he seemed like a really nice guy, all 450 pounds of him. The description they’ve released is not a lot of help.

“Tree of Life is a period piece centered around three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son (Hunter McCracken) of two characters (Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain) witnesses the loss of innocence. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way, of putting oneself first. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth. Framing this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world.” Hmmm. Brad Pitt?

And the least successful. Over the years, he has tried to conquer Metro City in every imaginable way. Each attempt, a colossal failure thanks to the caped superhero known as “Metro Man,” an invincible hero until the day Megamind actually kills him in the throes of one of his botched evil plans. Suddenly, Megamind has no purpose. A supervillain without a superhero. He realizes that achieving his life’s ambition is the worst thing that ever happened to him. Megamind decides that the only way out of his rut is to create a new hero opponent called “Titan,” who promises to be bigger, better and stronger than Metro Man ever was. Pretty quickly Titan starts to think it’s much more fun to be a villain than a good guy. Except Titan doesn’t just want to rule the world, he wants to destroy it. Now, Megamind must decide: can he defeat his own diabolical creation? Can the world’s smartest man make the smart decision for once? A veteran engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine), aboard another train in the runaway’s path, devise an incredible plan to try and stop it – and prevent certain disaster in a heavily populated area. Sounds like Speed on steroids. One reviewer thought it sounded like one of those math problems from middle school. “An unmanned train loaded with 8 freight cars of poisonous chemicals is headed south towards a heavily populated area at 80 mph. It is still 150 miles away, but should the train hit the city, the event radius is estimated to be between 20 to 45 miles. In addition, a different train, carrying 150 students, is heading northeast at a speed of 65 mph. Given that Chris Pine is shirtless for exactly 3 seconds in the trailer, and Unstoppable is set to come out on 11/12, what are the chances that it’ll be a decent movie?”

But the second time around, well, some of the charm has worn off. I had high hopes for Iron Man 2. The wit and swagger of the first movie drew me in and kept me engaged the entire time we were together and I was expecting more of the same. Sure, there were still flashes of wit, and plenty of swagger, but this time I found it more annoying than endearing. And sad to say, I kept looking at my watch wondering why our second encounter seemed to drag on so long, when really it was just a few minutes over two hours long.

I can’t blame it all Tony. He’s the victim of a weak script. Robert Downey Jr. is still great as the billionaire inventor and he’s got some real on-screen chemistry going with Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays his long suffering assistant Pepper Potts. But this time Tony’s got too much to deal with – the government wants to take his Iron Man suit, a Russian physicist (Mickey Rourke) wants revenge for something Tony’s father did to his father, a business rival wants to ruin his company, and oh yeah, he’s dying because the palladium in the arc reactor that powers his heart is poisoning him. It all makes for a muddled plot that moves noisily from point to point.

But wait there’s more. I haven’t even mentioned the members of S.H.I.E.L.D who show up. Clark Gregg is back as Agent Coulson, Samuel L. Jackson shows up as Nick Fury, and Scarlett Johansson plays Natalie Rushman, an undercover operative planted at Stark Industries. And while Johansson did some rather excellent ass-kicking, the presence of these characters feels forced. So why are they there? It’s certainly not to add anything to the plot of this movie. Turns out they are there to set up the Avengers movies coming to theaters next summer and the summer after that. Frankly, I wish the producers and writers had stayed focused on this movie.

So I’m sorry Tony. I wanted our relationship to last; I wanted Iron Man to be a super-hero franchise I could stick with through sequel after sequel. But I think it was just meant to be a one-time thing between us.

If you go to Sherlock Holmes expecting anything resembling Basil Rathbone or any other incarnation of the staid Sherlock Holmes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s books, you’ll be happily surprised (or sadly disappointed) by Guy Ritchie’s imaginative 21st century, testosterone driven, new version of the detective series. Watching Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson is a totally entertaining couple of hours.

Robert Downey’s Sherlock is anything but staid. He may be brilliant, but that British upper crust veneer that has been his usual cover is gone. This Sherlock is a brawling, drinking, less than clean cut mess and Watson is there to try and keep him from himself. And Jude Law’s Watson is anything but the bumbling sidekick of the older films; he’s right in there with Holmes fighting, detecting and getting into various kinds of deep trouble. He is also in the midst of extracting himself from their relationship so he can get married. They make a nice couple, but you see early on that this may be their last case.

The case at hand has to do with catching a somewhat supernatural murderer of young women who is caught and hanged, then miraculously (to everyone except Holmes, of course) comes back from the dead and threatens all of London with his evil powers. Plot points include a secret society, an old flame of Holmes’, various bad guys, good and bad cops, members of Parliament, and lots of interesting clues that must be solved. Holmes and Watson follow them all to their conclusion and of course save the country. While there are two women in the film (Rachel McAdams as Holmes’ old flame brought there by a mysterious stranger specifically to get Holmes involved in this case, and Kelly Reilly as Watson’s fiancé), this is really an “odd couple” buddy film and the chemistry between Downey and Law is just plain yummy. In all fairness, script-wise the actual solving of the case itself isn’t really all that compelling, but watching Downey and Law get to the end is.

The ending is entirely a set-up for a sequel, and I hope they do a couple if they can keep the fun and the chemistry going. I’d recommend this movie for the whole family, as a nice date movie, and as a chicks’ outing, too.

I am sure Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would not approve of the upcoming Guy Ritchie version of his Sherlock Holmes. From the looks of the trailer, it is very 21st century, very effects driven, very silly. But I have to admit, I love Robert Downey Jr. and I wouldn’t throw Jude Law out of bed for eating crackers. So despite its oh-so-modern affectations, I am totally looking forward to it. In theaters December 25, 2009. Watch the trailer.
