I’m a little late to the party, but I finally saw the new “Star Trek” movie over the weekend. My expectations were probably a tad too high going in based on all the raves from chicks and roosters alike whose opinions I trust and value. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed the movie, especially the performances of the new (young) Kirk and Spock. As a fan of CHiPS, I got an extra special kick out of seeing the son of Ponch and Jon’s old boss (remember Sgt. Catraire, played by Robert Pine?) in the lead role. Chris Pine looks a lot like his dad, only (sorry senior Mr. Pine), cuter.
I didn’t quite grasp the whole time travel, space-time continuum part of the story. So I got a bit lost from the get-go. But I can blame part of that on my sci-fi ignorance and illiteracy. Overall, it’s a solid movie and a must-see for anyone who grew up watching the original Star Trek series on television (at least in reruns!). I think director J.J. Abrams did a great job of creating a believable backstory and character camaraderie with Kirk, Spock, Bones, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov that makes this the best franchise reboot in recent memory. But please, find a way to give William Shatner a brief cameo (and Bill – don’t be greedy! You’re making plenty from residuals and Priceline) in the future (past) installments!
p.s. I saw it with my brother (I guess it’s okay to be seen with your sister at the movie theater when you’re both freakin’ OLD). He liked the movie too.
I LOVED this movie. I’ve been a Star Trek fan for years and even though they rewrote the whole timeline to “reboot” the franchise, I loved it. The new cast is full of cute boys who were well cast in their roles and acted well. Plus, there were enough inside jokes, and Leonard Nimoy, to keep old-time Star Trek fans like me happy. I’ll look forward to the future installments to see where J.J. Abrams takes it from here. And I agree with Mainstream Chick — find a way to work William Shatner in somehow!
[…] characters and the casting are generally spot-on, with most of the major players returning from the 2009 Star Trek reboot. There’s Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, […]
