I’m always a bit skeptical when a movie with a pair of talented leads opens on a streaming service without a theatrical release. So I was pleasantly surprised by The Gorge. A few friends had talked it up so I decided to check it out— mostly because I like Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit; Emma). If you have Apple TV+, access to a big-screen TV with good audio, and two hours to kill, then grab some popcorn and dive into The Gorge. It’s a genre-defying amalgam of horror, sci-fi, mystery, thriller, and romance. A meet-cute like no other.
Here’s the gist: Teller and Taylor-Joy play Levi and Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a dangerous gorge filled with mysterious things. They have no idea what evil lurks within, or what they are defending the world from. They are two lonely souls who find ways to communicate across the vastness of the gorge— and fall in love. Levi constructs a makeshift zipline to close the gap between them. Love blossoms. The horrors of the gorge are revealed. And a struggle for survival ensues. Have fun!
Note: Keep an eye out for clever little nods to Whiplash and Queen’s Gambit!
